PRODUCT DESIGN: Concept Ideas

Method 8: What if mind-map for design inspiration

Step 1. Creativity

There is no wrong or right way to design but the strategy below is one of eight that can help give you a starting point or help when you get ‘designers block.’  When producing your design ideas try and sketch simple ideas free hand first.

■ Keep the drawings simple.

■ Make the drawings large.

■ Only use colour when it is important.

■ Use notes that ...

◆ ask questions

◆ describe things

◆ suggest materials

◆ given reasons.

NO IDEA IS A BAD IDEA

If you draw an idea and you don’t thinks that it is a good idea then you should still present it in your paper work regardless. Why?

Initial Ideas Communication

If you were an architect, which sketch would you use to present your idea of the Sydney Opera House to a panel of judges?

There is a lot of VALUE in every Sketch, GOOD or BAD. Sketches are simple and communicate an idea.

Improving your Sketching and Design Ideas

If you wish to improve your sketches recap over the graphics tutorials that we have covered for one point perspective, two pint perspective and isometric. The videos below are also really good and you can watch these at home as there are lots more…….

Downloadable Help Sheet
Vids

A help sheet is shown below for the pages you are going to complete. This shows one of the possible ways how you can layout your sheet if you need help and guidance. It can be downloaded and printed via the printer icon. Also look at past examples for inspiration

Laying out the What If Mind-map Design Ideas Page

An example of how to layout the what if mind-map design sheets is shown below. Remember you can use your own headings relevant to your own project. This shows one of the possible ways of how you can layout your sheet if you need help and guidance. How you lay this page out is again up to you, there are several ways.

This method allows you to develop creative ideas quickly.

It is a good technique to use at the beginning of generating ideas.

This method encourages you to use Divergent Thinking by asking the question “what if?”
